Garbage Disposal Basics for Dummies

Do you need a new garbage disposal? There are some things to keep in mind when purchasing a new unit that’s right for your house and your needs.

Horsepower

It’s important to consider getting a garbage disposal that has at least ½ horsepower. If you could find a unit with ¾ HP then that’d be better. In a larger household, 1 HP is powerful enough to tackle more waste.

Rust proof

In addition to horsepower, you must also consider getting a garbage disposal that’s rust-proof, instead of just being rust-resistant. Of course, it’s more expensive than a model without this feature. However, it’s worth the extra penny considering the fact that it can last longer.

To be sure, opt for a model that’s made of 100% stainless steel.

Noise

This is also essential as you want to make sure that your neighbours can keep sleeping when you turn it on. Modern units these days have sound dampening feature that allows the machine to work in a quiet mode. Even if you purchase a powerful machine, it can still work quietly, as long as it has that feature.

Features

The more features the unit has, the more expensive it is. But, sometimes, it’s worth the investment. Thus, if you’re not short on budget, you could look for a unit with manual reset buttons, corrosion protection and other important features that you think you may need to make it easier for you to dispose waste.

By looking at these factors, it’ll make it easier for you to narrow down your choices.
